DESIGN CONCEPT
A narrow courtyard becomes the primary breathing space for a densely occupied plot in the city’s suburbs. Two slender multistory residential buildings consisting of single room tenements look at each other across this central courtyard. One of these blocks is lifted up off the plaza level to reveal views of the vast agricultural landscape beyond, offering relief from the vertical canyon of space.
MATERIAL PALETTE
  • External walls of exposed brick and distressed, exposed concrete
  • External brickwork complemented by locally fabricated metal screens
  • External brickwork accentuated by washed concrete textured walls using local pink stone aggregate
  • External paving and feature walls of locally mined black stone random cladding
  • External facades softened by sloping canopies of locally handmade terracotta tiles
  • Courtyards planted with indigenous plants like Elephant Ear, Bamboo and giant Ferns.
