DESIGN CONCEPT
We were presented with an existing and abandoned civil structure within a deserted landscape to convert into a space for marketing and business. Our architectural solution was an attempt to humanize this structure with the objective of creating a space of relief from the harsh and desolate environment outside. Towards this end, we introduced two architectural elements - a light-filled and heavily planted courtyard at the centre of the building which brings light and life into the once dark centre of the large span building. This becomes the focal point of the interior space. On the outer edge of the existing building, we introduced a veranda that becomes a buffer between the harsh environment of the outside and the very soothing atmosphere of the interior. The transition between inside and outside is softened and blurred, creating a more complementary relationship between building and landscape.
MATERIAL PALETTE
  • Wooden formwork, cast concrete ceilings, contrasted with more crisp gypsum drop ceilings.
  • Flooring of plank-style concrete finish tiles lends an expansive feeling to the space.
  • Strategic interior elements clad in forest green marble become areas of visual interest.
  • A continuous and winding wooden element, defines the interior space, sometimes providing seating and at other times providing a work surface.
  • A white-painted metal veranda topped with agri-netting becomes a buffer between inside and outside.
  • Tropical plants including tropical palms, Philodendron and Calathea Lutea lend a lush feel.
  • An outdoor landscape featuring elements of the traditional Bengal landscape like 'pukurs' and lush planting.
